Examinees

To learn more about exam registration, authorization, and results, please select your exam from the choices below.

Fundamentals exams

The following information applies to all FE and FS applicants.

Eligibility

The California board does not require examinees to submit an application or an additional fee prior to registering with NCEES and scheduling an exam.

Examinees will be provided one attempt per testing window and no more than three attempts in a 12-month approval period, beginning with the examinee’s first attempt. Examinees who require more than three attempts or allow their 12-month approval period to expire must contact the board directly to obtain additional approvals.

After passing the exam, examinees may apply directly to the California board to obtain certification as an engineer-in-training (EIT).

Results

Exam results for the computer-based FE and FS exams are typically available within 7–10 business days. Examinees will receive an email notification from NCEES with instructions to view their results in their MyNCEES account. Results will include a link to your licensing board for additional state-specific information or instructions as appropriate.

All results are reported as pass or fail. If you fail the examination, you will receive a diagnostic report showing your performance for each of the major topics covered on the exam.

Cancellations and refunds

Refer to the section on computer-based exams in the NCEES Examinee Guide for information about cancellations, refunds, and rescheduling.

Professional exams

All candidates who are required by the California board to pass a national examination now pay NCEES directly during the registration process for national examination-related fees. Examinees must have a SSN or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to take the exam in CA.

NCEES registration guidelines for California PE/PS candidates

Registering with NCEES reserves your seat and exam book, but it does not constitute an application to the California board. NCEES does not approve applications for candidates to sit for exams.

If you register on the NCEES website for a national examination and fail to submit an application to the California board by the above deadlines, your exam(s) will be canceled and you will not be allowed to sit for the exam in accordance with the NCEES cancellation policy.

Select your site and afternoon module carefully when you register. After the California board has approved your exam registration on the NCEES system, no site or module changes will be allowed. The California board will approve exam registration on the NCEES system as registrations are received and processed.

You must register and refile with the California Board for each exam cycle; your exam and site choices do not carry forward to the next exam cycle.

Exam authorization

NCEES will email instructions on downloading and printing exam authorization notices 2–3 weeks before the national exam dates. If you are taking more than one exam, you will have a separate exam authorization notice for each exam. You will be required to present the exam authorization along with a valid, government-issued photo ID (must contain your signature) upon arrival at the exam site. You will not receive a separate notice from the California board.

Results

When results have been released (typically 8–10 weeks after the exam), NCEES will send an email informing you that your result can be accessed through your MyNCEES account.

All results are reported as pass or fail. If you fail the examination, you will receive a diagnostic report showing your performance for each of the major topics covered on the exam.

Cancellations and refunds

You may cancel your exam registration through your MyNCEES account any time before the NCEES registration deadline (August 28, 2014). Refunds will include exam fees paid to NCEES during the registration process minus a $50 processing fee.

Funds may not be transferred to a later exam administration date. After the NCEES registration deadline, registrations may not be canceled and fees will not be refunded.
