Fundamentals exams
FE exams

The following information applies to all FE applicants.

Eligibility

If you meet one of the criteria listed in items Nos. 1 or 2 below you are no longer required to obtain approval from the NYS Board for Engineering and Land Surveying prior to registering for the FE exam with NCEES.

  1. EAC/ABET engineering programs—Students and applicants who are within twenty (20) credits of graduation (generally your final semester) or have graduated from an EAC/ABET accredited baccalaureate program in engineering are automatically eligible to sit for the NCEES FE exam.
  2. ETAC/ABET engineering technology programs—Students and applicants that have graduated from an ETAC/ABET accredited baccalaureate program in engineering technology are automatically eligible to sit for the NCEES FE exam

All foreign and non-ABET education programs—Students and applicants who are not enrolled or have not graduated from an EAC or ETAC ABET accredited baccalaureate program must submit an application with $70 fee to the New York State Board for Engineering and Land Surveying (NYS Board) for eligibility to sit for the NCEES FE exam. Once you have received approval from the NYS Board to sit for the NCEES FE exam, you must register and pay the exam administration fee with NCEES through their online registration system. Examinees will be provided one attempt per testing window and no more than three attempts in a 12-month approval period, beginning with the examinee’s first attempt.

Results

Exam results for the computer-based FE exams are typically available within 7–10 business days. Examinees will receive an email notification from NCEES with instructions to view their results in their MyNCEES account. Results will include a link to your licensing board for additional state-specific information or instructions as appropriate.

All results are reported as pass or fail. If you fail the examination, you will receive a diagnostic report showing your performance for each of the major topics covered on the exam.

Professional exams

The following information applies to PE, PS, and SE examinees.

How do I register?

You must first apply to the New York Board for approval to sit for the exam in New York. Visit the New York Board’s website for instructions on the approval process.

After the Board has notified you of your approval, register online with NCEES by the deadline (August 28, 2014) to reserve your seat for the exam.

After registering with NCEES, candidates are required by the New York Board to schedule to take the exam in New York. To do this, visit Castle Worldwide (the board’s testing services provider) for instructions and fee information.

Exam authorization

NCEES will email you 2–3 weeks before the exam with a link to download and print your exam authorization notice. Read it carefully. You will be required to present this document along with a valid, government-issued photo ID upon arrival at the exam site.

Results

When results have been released to the New York Board (typically 8–10 weeks after the exam) and validated, NCEES will send an email informing you that your result can be accessed through your MyNCEES account. The New York Board will notify you of any state-specific exam results.

All results are reported as pass or fail. If you fail the examination, you will receive a diagnostic report showing your performance for each of the major topics covered on the exam.
